By Team GLOBALFTI

Updated October 13, 2026

Prepare for both CMA USA parts with 32 active study weeks, a proposed 10-hour weekly routine and 4–6 buffer weeks for busy periods at work.

Indian finance professional studying at a home desk beside a laptop and calculator; CMA USA study plan for working professionals in India, 2026.

A full-time job leaves a few hours a day for study, and the CMA USA (Certified Management Accountant) asks for steady hours over many months. This guide gives you a plan of 32 active study weeks for both parts, plus four to six buffer weeks for the weeks you will miss. It also covers the exam format since case-based questions arrived, who the credential suits, what it costs and the deadlines to plan around.

Exam rules and fees come from IMA (Institute of Management Accountants) pages, linked at the end of each section. They change, so confirm each item with IMA before you register. Last reviewed: October 2026.

1. What the CMA USA Is

The CMA is awarded by IMA, a US professional body for management accountants. It has two exam parts, which you can take in either order. The work it tests is management accounting: planning, costing, performance measurement, decision analysis and risk.

Part 1: Financial Planning, Performance, and Analytics

TopicWeight
External Financial Reporting Decisions15%
Planning, Budgeting and Forecasting20%
Performance Management20%
Cost Management15%
Internal Controls15%
Technology and Analytics15%

Part 2: Strategic Financial Management

TopicWeight
Financial Statement Analysis20%
Corporate Finance20%
Business Decision Analysis25%
Enterprise Risk Management10%
Capital Investment Decisions10%
Professional Ethics15%

Weights are from IMA’s 2024 Content Specification Outline (effective September 2024), available from IMA’s CMA how-to page. Check the current outline before you finalise your plan.

2. Who Should Think Twice Before Choosing CMA USA

Does CMA USA fit your plan? Three questions settle most cases.

Do you want to perform statutory audit or sign audit reports? Then the CMA is the wrong credential. It is a management accounting qualification, and audit licensing rules vary by country.

Do you want a broad financial accounting and reporting qualification with a longer, multi-paper route? Then compare it with ACCA. The two credentials suit different careers.

Is your work, or the work you want, in costing, budgeting, planning, performance or decision support? Then the CMA fits. That work may count toward the experience requirement, depending on your duties, and the exam topics match it.

A credential is a means. Pick the one that matches the job you want in three years.

3. The Exam Format

Each part is a four-hour computer-based exam with 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and two case-based questions (CBQs). All exams are taken at a Prometric test centre. Remote testing is not available. Exams run in three windows each year: January/February, May/June and September/October.

What changed with case-based questions

IMA launched case-based questions in May 2026, starting with the May/June window. For the English exam, the essay version ran up to the May/June 2026 window and is not offered from September/October 2026, except for the regional exceptions IMA describes in its essay-version guidance. Each case is a short study of about 250 words, followed by no more than seven questions. The questions use drag-and-drop, fill-in-the-blank, select-from-a-list and calculation formats.

IMA states that the Content Specification Outline and learning outcomes do not change, and that CBQs test the same topics at the same difficulty as the essays. Only the format differs.

How the exam is scored

ItemWhat IMA says
Score scale0–500, scaled. The minimum passing score is 360.
MCQ requirementYou must answer at least 50% of the MCQs correctly to take the CBQ section.
Wrong answersThere is no penalty for wrong answers. Partial credit is given on CBQs.
CBQ weightThe CBQ section has the same weight as the essay section it replaced.
Time, as currently scheduledFour hours, with 1 hour for the CBQ section. Time left over from the 3 hours for MCQs is added to the CBQ hour.

A scaled score is not a percentage of questions answered correctly, so do not read 360 as 72%. The 50% MCQ requirement is only the minimum for reaching the CBQs, not a passing standard. IMA can change the format, so check the current Candidate Handbook before you build your exam-day plan.

English CMA exam in India: 100 MCQs in three hours and two case-based questions in one hour. At least 50% MCQ accuracy is required to reach CBQs; the passing scaled score is 360 out of 500. Each case has up to seven questions.

4. A 32-Week Study Plan

This is our planning assumption, not an IMA requirement. Study time depends on your background. A commerce graduate who has done costing before may need less time than someone starting fresh. Let a diagnostic test at the start of each part override the week allocations below.

Weekly schedule: about 10 hours, across 32 active study weeks plus 4–6 buffer weeks. One hour each weekday morning (5 hours) and 2.5 hours each on Saturday and Sunday (5 hours). That gives about 160 hours a part.

Proposed 10-hour study week: one hour each weekday and 2.5 hours each weekend day, including 30 minutes of mixed-topic revision on Saturday.
A proposed 10-hour weekly routine. Study time varies by background and availability.

Part 1 (weeks 1–16)

WeeksTopicWeight
1–2External Financial Reporting Decisions15%
3–5Planning, Budgeting and Forecasting20%
6–8Performance Management20%
9–10Cost Management15%
11–12Internal Controls15%
13–14Technology and Analytics15%
15–16Full-length mocks and weak-topic revision–

Part 2 (weeks 17–32)

27Enterprise Risk Management10%
28Capital Investment Decisions10%
29–30Professional Ethics15%

These allocations are a starting point that considers topic weight and expected workload. Adjust them using your diagnostic results.

CMA USA roadmap: Part 1 in active weeks 1–16 and Part 2 in weeks 17–32, each ending with two weeks of mocks and revision; add 4–6 buffer weeks. Topic allocations match the article tables.
32 active study weeks plus 4–6 buffer weeks. Adjust topic allocations using diagnostic results.

Turn weeks into exam windows

Allow more than 32 calendar weeks for preparation, missed weeks and exam scheduling. Add slack for missed weeks, and match each part to a testing window.

  • Example: start in early January 2027 and finish Part 1 study by late April. Sit Part 1 in May 2027, which falls in the May/June window. Start Part 2 straight after, finish study by late August and sit Part 2 in September or October 2027. That takes about ten months, including slack.
  • Slack: add four to six weeks across the plan for missed weeks. Month-end close, work travel, illness and family commitments will cost you some.
  • Exact dates: the windows in this example are planning assumptions. Check IMA’s published schedule and the date range of each window with Prometric when you book.
  • The three-year clock: your three years to pass both parts start when you enter the programme. Pay the entrance fee when you are ready to study, not months earlier.

If a week goes wrong

  • A missed week: do not try to double up. Shift the rest of the plan by a week and use your slack.
  • Month-end and audit season: drop to 5–6 hours for that fortnight, keep the weekend sessions, and move the heavy topic out of those weeks.
  • A missed window: if you have already bought an exam registration and cannot sit it in that window, use IMA’s Exam Switch Form, which allows one switch per exam part for a fee (see section 6). A registration you have bought stays tied to its window, even if you have not booked an appointment. If you have not yet bought a registration, choose a later window when you register. To avoid the problem, choose your registration window when your preparation is on track, while allowing enough time to meet registration deadlines and book your preferred appointment.

Rules that make the plan work

  • Revise as you go. Keep an error log of every question you got wrong and why. Spend the last 30 minutes of each Saturday session on mixed questions from earlier topics.
  • Practise questions the same week you study a topic. Reading alone gives false comfort.
  • Practise CBQs from the start. Use your provider’s up-to-date CBQ material, plus any official samples IMA publishes, not old essay banks.
  • Pace the MCQs. As currently scheduled, three hours for 100 questions is about 1.8 minutes each. Flag a slow calculation and move on. Pace yourself within the three-hour MCQ limit. The CBQ section has one hour, plus any unused MCQ time. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so do not leave a question blank.
  • Judge readiness by timed performance, not by the 50% minimum. Look for steady scores across several timed mocks, compared with your provider’s benchmarks.
  • Sit at least two timed full-length mocks in the same time slot as your booked exam, so four hours of focus is not new to you on the day.
  • Do not skip Ethics. It carries 15% of Part 2.

5. Who Is Eligible

RequirementWhat IMA asks for
MembershipActive IMA membership
EducationA bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, or an approved professional certification. Your university sends transcripts to IMA directly.
ExperienceTwo continuous years of professional experience in management accounting and/or financial management. This may be completed before, or within seven years of, passing the exams.

Experience is judged by what you do, not by your job title.

What counts as experience

6. Deadlines and Booking Rules

  • Three years to pass both parts. Counted from your entry into the programme. If you do not pass both within that time, any part you have passed expires and you must pay the entrance fee again.
  • Seven years for the education and experience requirements. Education documents are due within seven years after you pass, and your two years of experience can come before the exams or within seven years after.
  • Book early. You schedule on Prometric’s website, within your purchased testing window. IMA suggests scheduling at least four weeks ahead to get your first choice of date, time and location. Appointments must be scheduled at least 72 hours before the exam date.
  • Changing your appointment. Cancel or reschedule at least five days before the exam. A fee applies if you change it 5 to 45 days out, and missing the exam forfeits your exam fee.
  • Changing your testing window. You can switch windows by completing IMA’s Exam Switch Form and paying the fee. Only one switch per exam part is allowed, and the fee cannot be waived. Confirm the current process with IMA before relying on a switch.
  • Accommodations. If you need an accommodation under IMA’s ADA policy, notify IMA at least two months before your exam.

7. What It Costs

ItemAmount (USD)
Entrance fee$300
Exam fee, each part$545
Entrance plus both parts$1,390
IMA professional membership$295 a year
Total in the first year$1,685

These are the professional-member prices listed by IMA. Student and academic members pay lower entrance and exam fees; check IMA’s store for current amounts. Prep-course fees are separate.

Budgeting from India. IMA’s fees are in US dollars. Your bank or card may add currency conversion and foreign-transaction charges, so ask your bank before you pay. Put the exam fees and the course fee in the same budget, with a margin for a retake.

  • Refunds: the entrance fee is not refundable. An exam fee can be refunded within 30 days of purchase if you have not scheduled, minus a $25 processing fee.
  • Retakes: a retake needs a new exam registration.
  • Regrades: CBQ-format exams are not eligible for regrading because they are scored electronically. For candidates who took the former essay-format exam, IMA allowed a regrade request only if the score was exactly 350, the exam was from the most recent testing window, and the request met IMA’s conditions. The regrade fee was $150 and results typically took 3–4 weeks.
  • After certification: you must keep your CMA active by paying IMA’s annual CMA fee and completing 30 hours of CPE a year, including 2 on ethics. The annual CMA fee includes IMA membership and CMA maintenance. Check the current combined amount for your membership category.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the passing score for each CMA part?

IMA scores each part on a 0–500 scale, and the minimum passing score is 360. The score is scaled, so it is not a percentage of questions answered correctly.

Are the CMA essay questions still on the exam?

Not on the English CMA exam, which is the exam candidates in India take. IMA replaced essays with case-based questions, and the May/June 2026 window was the last one to offer essays, so September/October 2026 onward is case-based only. Under IMA’s published 2026 guidance, China, Taiwan and Japan continue to offer essays on the English and local-language exams.

How many case-based questions are in each part?

Each part has two CBQs. Each case is about 250 words, followed by no more than seven questions.

How much does the CMA USA cost?

At IMA’s professional-member prices, the entrance fee is $300 and each part is $545, which is $1,390 in total. IMA professional membership is separate and is listed at $295 a year. Student and academic members pay lower entrance and exam fees; check IMA’s store for current amounts.

Can I change my exam date or window?

Within your window, you can cancel or reschedule at least five days before the exam, and a fee applies 5 to 45 days out. To move to another window, IMA offers an Exam Switch Form with a fee and one switch per part.

How long do I have to finish the CMA?

You have three years from entering the programme to pass both parts. The education and experience requirements must be met within seven years of passing.

Does my job count as experience?

FP&A, budgeting, forecasting, financial close and cost accounting usually do. Audit, tax, risk, analytics and sustainability reporting count when the work is substantially management accounting or financial management. Ask IMA if you are unsure.
