Eligibility Criteria for CPA Australia

To qualify for CPA Australia membership, you need to meet three essential requirements:

1. Recognised Academic Qualifications

  • First and foremost, you must hold a degree equivalent to an Australian bachelor’s degree or a relevant postgraduate qualification.
  • In addition, completing at least eight accounting or finance subjects is mandatory.
  • Although you can begin the CPA Program before graduating, your degree must be officially conferred before you can achieve full CPA status.

2. Core Competency Requirements

  • Secondly, candidates are expected to meet core competency requirements, which cover advanced knowledge areas usually included in accredited accounting degrees.
  • However, if your degree does not cover some of these areas, you can bridge the gaps by completing Foundation exams—self-paced assessments designed for this purpose.
  • Moreover, candidates with over five years of professional experience, or those holding a designation from another accredited body, may qualify for exemptions through the Experience-Based Pathway.

3. Professional Experience

  • Finally, applicants must demonstrate at least 36 months of relevant work experience, which can be gained before, during, or after the CPA Program.
  • Additionally, you are required to achieve at least 10 professional skills across four competency areas.
  • Importantly, prior internships, volunteer roles, or even part-time jobs can count, and backdated experience may also be claimed if it meets the criteria.
